Anxiety, depression, or stress getting to you?

Everyone can face challenges to their mental health, especially from stress, depression, and anxiety. While they say about 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness or disorder at some point in their life, 5 out of 5 people will face some level of mental health challenges to overcome.

As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so this is a great time to think about being proactive in caring for your mental health.

A few tips to improve your mental health include:

  • Identify and experience your feelings instead of bottling them up or pushing them down. Research shows that all of our feelings are valid and expressing them in healthy ways is important for our mental health. Did you know that there are over 3,000 words in the English language that describe or relate to our emotions?

  • Practice self-care that includes eating healthy, exercising, getting enough sleep, exposure to sunlight, and incorporating relaxation practices are all helpful.

  • Creating routines that build in time for self-care and your daily tasks not only ensures that you are building a schedule that allows for things important to your mental health, but also can reduce stress and anxiety because you have a plan and routine that can reduce worry and decision fatigue. Having a doable plan can be life-giving for many.

  • Build connections with people around you, because far too often people who are surrounded by others still feel alone and they don’t realize that others feel that way too. (And you can build one-to-one connections virtually or using social distancing guidelines too.)

  • Treat yourself kindly, just like you would others.

Reflexology clients also often report benefits tied to mental health ranging from getting better sleep, feeling less pain, reducing stress and anxiety, as well as overall feeling better both physically and emotionally.
